Chapter Eight

We galloped over the open range as fast as our legs would carry us. Our linear motions would help us get to the property gates much faster than if we had used our trucks, mainly because we could soar over creeks instead of pausing to unlock the gates. We could also run for the hills if we needed a quick escape or if someone else took cover there.

Still, as we bolted into the dark, I couldn’t help but remember our species’ restrictions. Horses had excellent vision, but still had limitations thanks to blind spots. Gentry stumbled as if he had read my thoughts, something that our shifter family didn’t have the ability to do until we found our respective mates.

Gentry sped ahead as soon as he regained his bearings while I nudged Fletcher forward by staying on his flank. He shook off his frustrations, blowing and snorting like a mad stallion. As the youngest, he hated to be pushed, but he was by far the fastest of the three.

Gentry and I were counting on him to outrun us in the final stretch.

Only humans were able to trigger the alarms, and in our neck of the woods, only one gifted family would dare to breach our security system. The wolves seldom crossed into our territory, but they undoubtedly believed we had gone back on our word to keep the peace. They would view a multi-city roundup as a failure to honor our treaty.

Still, in this region, at this time, our enemies were likely to be other humans, not shifters. Still, while humans were no match for us, we had to watch ourselves when we ran into the clearing in the dark hours of night especially since we could face other four-legged predators or those with a poisonous strike. We all were able to slip across these hills and valleys with the gentle ease of ownership and familiarity. Humans, on the other hand, used weapons.

For now, we focused on the limited view straight ahead. Whoever triggered the alarm would soon make their way from the property entrance to the Southern Paddocks, the only portion of the ranch that was exposed to theft and vandalism.

We lacked the manpower to make improvements right away, but now it appeared as if we might suffer the consequences. We ran together, but all had our independent thoughts. I was willing to bet that my brothers were angry with themselves, too, because our negligence could cost us our horse counterparts. We had almost twenty head of our own stock housed in those pens. They were now vulnerable.

Gentry cut to the left while Fletcher and I pulled ahead. Fifty strides later, my youngest brother nickered and veered to the right. Our pounding hooves soon blended with the overbearing sound of a rapidly approaching stampede. Hooves hammered against the ground in those three-beat strides which was the fastest way a horse could run. That undeniable gait alerted us to the band of animals cantering away from a significant threat.
